Network Shocked by Romo Controversy
Network Shocked by Romo Controversy, Relieved to Learn Outrage May Be Tax-Deductible

CBS Insists Decision Is About Integrity, Accidentally Leaves Seventy-Two-Million-Dollar Spreadsheet Open

CBS placed Tony Romo on leave following his arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, saying he would remain away from the network "until further notice." J.J. Watt will work with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson during Romo's absence. Romo has not been convicted, and the network has not announced that his employment has been permanently terminated.

Network executives described themselves as saddened and shocked by the controversy.

Their mood reportedly improved after tax advisers explained that properly documented outrage might qualify as an ordinary and necessary business expense.

"This remains a painful situation," said CBS Chief Emotion Officer Amanda Receipts. "However, we are encouraged that some of the pain may be depreciated over four fiscal years."

Itemizing the Outrage

The network immediately began itemizing its response.

A solemn corporate statement was valued at $4,800.

An emergency meeting was valued at $32,000.

A crisis-management consultant was valued at $175,000.

The phrase "our values" was listed as an intangible asset with no established market price.

CBS's finance team also prepared a spreadsheet examining the cost of every available emotional reaction.

Concern was affordable.

Disappointment was moderately priced.

Outrage carried higher legal expenses but offered the greatest potential contract relief.

Forgiveness was removed from consideration after accountants discovered it could require four additional years of payments.

The Accidentally Shared Spreadsheet

CBS insists no financial considerations influenced its response.

Unfortunately, that statement was delivered during a video call in which an executive accidentally shared a spreadsheet titled ROMO ETHICAL SCENARIOS AND NET SAVINGS.

The document contained six tabs:

- PUBLIC TRUST

- LEGAL RISK

- REPLACEMENT COST

- MORALS CLAUSE

- J.J. WATT AUDIENCE TESTING

- DO NOT SCREEN-SHARE

The executive attempted to close the file but accidentally opened a chart illustrating the relationship between public indignation and reduced payroll.

"At lower levels of concern, savings remain modest," the executive explained before realizing his microphone was still on. "But once we reach full institutional disappointment, the curve becomes very attractive."

CBS later said the chart had been taken out of context.

The network did not explain what context would make a rising graph labeled OUTRAGE PROFITABILITY less suspicious.

Romo Calls the Play

Tony Romo, meanwhile, reportedly predicted the network's strategy with the same enthusiasm he once used to identify blitzes.

"Ehhhh, I don't know, Jim," Romo said in a fictional audio recreation. "They're showing fake concern on the left side. Finance is lined up in the slot. J.J. Watt's coming off the edge, and Legal's dropping straight into salary-cap relief."

Although television networks do not have NFL salary caps, CBS executives reportedly enjoyed the phrase enough to commission merchandise.

T-shirts reading SALARY CAP RELIEF TOUR 2026 appeared briefly in the employee store before being moved to a locked cabinet labeled PENDING LITIGATION.

Public Reaction

Public reaction remained divided.

Football viewer Dennis Webb said CBS deserved credit for acting.

"Companies should have standards," Webb said. "It would simply be reassuring if the standards did not arrive holding a calculator."

Viewer Monica Patel said she supported accountability but questioned the choreography.

"The network looked horrified," she said. "Then somebody whispered the remaining contract value, and suddenly everyone looked horrified with excellent posture."

A fictional survey by the American Institute of Convenient Principles found that 89 percent of companies possess a strict ethical code.

Of those companies, 94 percent keep the code in Human Resources.

The remaining 6 percent keep it in Finance, where employees can find it faster.

Local philosopher Dr. Rebecca Bottomline said corporations often convert moral crises into financial instruments.

"First, outrage is expressed," Bottomline explained. "Then outrage is quantified. Finally, outrage is bundled with legal fees and sold internally as responsible governance."

Three Comedians, Three Verdicts

Three comedians performing nearby offered their assessments.

One said CBS's moral compass "points directly toward the nearest escape clause."

Another said network integrity was "brought to you by TurboTax."

A third suggested that "until further notice" should replace "void where prohibited" as America's official corporate motto.

What CBS Won't Say

CBS declined to discuss whether outrage-related costs would be deducted, amortized or carried forward against future scandals.

The Internal Revenue Service said outrage is not automatically tax-deductible, especially when accompanied by a commemorative plaque, naming rights or luxury seating.

The network nevertheless established a new accounting category called Principled Loss Avoidance.

J.J. Watt continues preparing to join Nantz and Wolfson. CBS described Watt as an accomplished analyst who brings intelligence, credibility and a compensation arrangement that nobody was willing to discuss on the record.

Network executives emphasized that they hope Romo addresses the allegations responsibly.

They also hope the legal department addresses the contract economically.

Asked which hope was stronger, executives said the question was unfair because hope cannot be measured.

Moments later, the accidentally shared spreadsheet displayed a tab labeled HOPE: BASE, OPTIMISTIC AND TERMINATION SCENARIOS.

Editorial and Satirical Disclaimer: This is a work of satire and satirical journalism. Tony Romo was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and has not been convicted of any crime. CBS Sports has announced a leave "until further notice," not a permanent dismissal. Assertions that CBS is motivated by avoiding the remaining cost of Romo's contract are satirical news speculation, not established fact. This story is entirely a human collaboration between two sentient beings: the world's oldest tenured professor and a philosophy major turned dairy farmer. Neither has successfully predicted a defensive formation, although the dairy farmer once identified a blitz after three cows rushed the same feeding bucket.
